JULY 2025 VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: Check out what drives and inspires volunteers, ALICIA PARRA AND JAVIER REYES.

Tell us about yourselves, such as favorite

story about you as a couple, where you are

from or where you did grow up, and favorite hobbies.

We met at our daughters’ middle school valentine’s

dance. Our daughters have been friends since third

grade. We have come a long way since that dance.

We are now a family with one son, two daughters,

one grandson, one granddaughter, and three dogs.

Javier is originally from El Paso and I am from the Lower

Rio Grande Valley (Brownsville/South Padre Island). We

have loved living in Austin, Round Rock, and in our current

home in Georgetown. I am a Laboratory Director for Westlake Hospital which keeps me busy and out of trouble…LOL

Javier is no slouch either and owns two businesses: Insurance Brokers which insures cities (including Bertram) for Health, Vision, Dental and Life; and JR Group KW Realty.

In our spare time, when we are not volunteering at the ranch, we like to buy and renovate condos for short-term rentals. Currently, we have one in South Padre and another one in Alto, New Mexico close to Ruidoso and Ski Apache. We like to stay busy!

How did you first learn about the ranch and how long have y’all volunteered?

I kept reading on social media about this amazing place that took in senior dogs and gave them a place to live, not a shelter, but a home. I signed up to volunteer and my first day of orientation was on my birthday in 2023. Javier joined a month later. He had not planned on volunteering and only went to the ranch to see about fostering Miss Macie. The ranch was short a cleaner that day, so Javier started helping out and the rest is history. We are grateful to be part of this wonderful organization.

If you could choose a favorite thing about volunteering at the ranch what it be and why?

For me it is walking the big dogs. I work in a hectic and chaotic environment and walking the dogs is therapeutic for me. I love them all and feel a quiet joy when I go to the ranch. Javier says “I am very blessed and enjoy the opportunity to give back by volunteering at LGCR.”

Thank you Rhonda for this amazing place. Thanks to all the wonderful volunteers and hardworking ranch staff that we have met and with whom we enjoy working.
