Volunteer Spotlight Dec 2024 - Vicky Blackwell

Tell us a little about yourself and how the role you are in supports the mission of LGCR.
I am originally from Connecticut and moved to Texas from Charlotte, North Carolina six years ago with my husband and our three dogs, Rylee, Indie, and Casper.
When I saw the article in Community Impact, which I believe was in 2019, announcing Living Grace Canine Ranch, I knew I had to volunteer. I have been a volunteer ever since, months before the first building went up on the property that we now affectionately call “The Ranch.” Since my involvement, my duties have been varied and included walking the residents; assisting in the planning of events and fundraisers; serving as an event ambassador; managing the volunteer database; and being a part of the social media bunkhouse relations team. I currently serve as the Operations & Membership Administrator where I continue to manage the volunteer database; track volunteer registrations, background checks, and volunteer training; create flyers; work on special projects; and design the format and post this monthly Spotlight (though, I am not on the selection committee who choose the featured volunteer).
It has been a joy to serve in a variety of capacities and work with this team of wonderful people, all of whom benefit LGCR’s mission of saving, serving, and valuing adoption-disadvantaged Texas senior dogs.
What is your favorite thing about LGCR?
My favorite things is the simple fact that Living Grace Canine Ranch exists. To have a sanctuary where senior dogs are loved and cared for and get a second chance at life, love, and happiness until the end of their days is so precious. What wasn’t so simple was how it came to exist through the hard work and determination of our Founder, Rhonda; our Operations Director, Karen; the Board Members; and countless selfless volunteers who have all worked tirelessly to make the ranch a successful, loving, and nurturing home for each resident to live the lives that they so richly deserve.
If you could make a change in the world, what would you change?
I would end hunger, abandonment, and cruelty to all dogs and make sure that they all had loving, caring homes. Living Grace is about as close as we can get to this by helping as many senior dogs as possible.
Vicky - you are a godsend to the ranch! Thank you for all you do!!
