Nanny Dolls
Dogs are social animals that develop strong emotional bonds with humans. When left alone, they may exhibit separation-related behavior (SRB), which typically arises from anxiety and distress about solitude.
At LGCR, most dogs do not show signs of SRB, but a few, like Henry Beagle and Henry Yorkie, had strong connections with their previous owners. For these residents, the comfort of another canine isn't sufficient; they specifically need a human's presence to feel secure.
Understanding Separation Anxiety in Dogs
One key distinction between SRB and other behavioral disorders is its specific trigger: being left alone. The signs of this condition can manifest before a pet owner leaves or shortly after their departure, usually emerging within a few moments to half an hour. This can include barking, pacing, or attempts to escape confinement, all stemming from separation anxiety.
The Misguided 'Cry It Out' Method
Many dog training resources propose a technique called 'crying it out,' where owners are advised to let their dogs whine or bark without an immediate response. However, this method can seriously affect a dog's mental and neurological health. Here's a deeper look at the potential damage:
- When left to cry, dogs may associate solitude with feelings of fear and abandonment, leading to increased anxiety over time.
- During intense distress, a dog's body releases stress hormones that can linger for days, impacting his physical health and emotional well-being.
Since the beginning of 2021, LGCR has introduced life-size Nanny dolls, which sit, sleep, and share meals with our residents. These dolls provide a sense of companionship, ensuring that our residents feel a comforting presence and never face the daunting experience of solitude alone.
