Bonita Cognitive Dementia
Canine cognitive dysfunction (CCD), or doggy dementia, typically affects dogs over 8 years old, particularly those over 14. Over 30% of senior dogs are estimated to exhibit varying degrees of dementia. The condition involves brain deterioration similar to Alzheimer's in humans, with atrophy affecting learning, memory (cerebral cortex), and coordination (cerebellum).
Pet owners often notice unusual behavioral changes in their dogs, particularly during the early evening and sunset. Observations include:
1. Getting lost in familiar places
2. Not recognizing familiar people or pets
3. Changes in sleep patterns
4. House-soiling
5. Restlessness
6. Pacing
7. Increased anxiety and vocalization
8. Aggression
Bonita's life journey continues to unfold. We have stood by her for four years, facing veterinary medical challenges together. While she may eventually 'forget' the faces of those who love her, the warmth of their presence will always resonate within her.

Fingers crossed, Bonita aka "the boo" is in a good stable pattern for now. A combination of vet guidance, medications and consistency in routine have been the key. She is such a sweet dog and as her FF parents we will continue to make her life as good as possible!
