When Deafness is an Occupational Hazard
Deafness should not be seen as a benchmark for one's capabilities.
Puppies can be born deaf, a condition called congenital deafness. While deafness is common in certain dog breeds, having a deaf working dog can create dangerous situations, especially for puppies learning to live in a soundless world.
Last Thanksgiving, LGCR's Rural Roadside Rescue saved mom and puppies. Today, Paisley is healthy and a permanent resident at the ranch. Her two adopted puppies are now far away. They were returned to the rural Midwest rescue because of deafness; hence, working dog-unadoptable. We thank the rescue for informing us and arranging safe transport for them to Texas.
Driving on rural roads in Texas shows what happens to unwanted dogs. Paisley's puppies are coming home. With their mother's guidance and our lessons in sign language, we plan to train the puppies to be full-time in-home companions. Life can be rewarding, offering every dog, regardless of age or challenges, human companionship and a sense of belonging.
Let's never give up on the miracle of Life and the power of LOVE.
