Farewell- Bothersome Skin Flaps
Lulu feels disappointed because, on Saturday, she will have her cup of tea brought to her bedside as she recovers from vulvoplasty surgery.
She has a condition called a recessed vulva, where excess skin folds over the vulva. This condition can trap moisture and increase the risk of both vaginal and urinary tract infections. In dogs with a recessed vulva, skin and fat hang over the vulva, holding urine and creating a warm, moist environment that helps bacteria grow.
Dogs with this condition may experience inflammation or infection in the skin folds, known as vaginitis. They may also develop urinary tract infections, often requiring long-term treatment with topical medicines or repeated oral antibiotics. Unfortunately, prolonged antibiotic use can lead to antibiotic-resistant infections.
Vulvoplasty is a surgery that removes extra skin to restore the vulva's standard shape. The amount of tissue removed depends on the severity of the vulva's recession.
